The Guardian on a Lotus Leaf: How We Designed the Violet Pixiu Earring
Every piece in our collection begins with a question. For the Violet Pixiu With Petal earring, the question was this: what would it look like if a mythical guardian chose to rest on a lotus leaf, just after a summer rain?
The answer became one of our most personal designs.
A Guardian That Only Takes, Never Gives Back
The Pixiu is one of the most revered creatures in Chinese mythology. Part dragon, part lion, this fierce but loyal beast has one remarkable trait that sets it apart from every other mythical creature: it has a mouth but no way to expel what it consumes. According to legend, the Pixiu feeds exclusively on gold, silver, and precious jewels, swallowing treasures from every direction and holding them forever.
This is why the Pixiu has been a symbol of wealth accumulation for over two thousand years. Ancient emperors kept Pixiu statues in their palaces, and during the Han Dynasty, it was declared a treasure of imperial power. In feng shui practice, the Pixiu remains one of the most potent talismans for drawing in financial fortune and preventing wealth from slipping away.
But the Pixiu is more than a wealth magnet. It is also a fierce protector. Its dragon head and lion body are said to ward off negative energy and evil spirits, creating a shield of spiritual safety around whoever carries it. For business owners and investors, wearing Pixiu jewelry is considered a way to attract new opportunities while safeguarding what has already been earned.
When we set out to create a Pixiu earring, we wanted to honor this layered symbolism while giving it a form that felt wearable and contemporary.
Why Violet? The Rarest Color in the Jadeite Spectrum
Not all jadeite is green. In fact, the most knowledgeable collectors understand that jadeite occurs across a remarkable range of colors, and among the rarest is violet, sometimes called lavender jadeite.
The violet hue in natural Burmese jadeite comes from trace amounts of manganese within the mineral structure. Unlike dyed or treated stones that display a flat, uniform purple, natural violet jadeite has a soft, misty glow that shifts between pink-purple and blue-violet depending on the light. In the jade trade, this quality is sometimes described poetically as "spring color," evoking the first flush of wisteria blossoms.
Among all jadeite colors, lavender is the second most valuable after imperial green. At a 2018 Beijing Poly Auction, a necklace of just 35 lavender jadeite beads sold for approximately $2.7 million. This rarity is not manufactured. Genuine violet jadeite forms under very specific geological conditions deep within Myanmar's mountains, where tectonic pressure and the right mineral cocktail align over millions of years.
For our Pixiu earring, the choice of violet jadeite was intentional. In Chinese tradition, purple has long been associated with nobility, spiritual awareness, and the arrival of good fortune. The phrase "紫气东来" (purple qi coming from the east) describes an auspicious omen, the appearance of purple energy on the horizon that signals blessings are on their way. A violet Pixiu, then, is not just a wealth guardian. It is a sign that prosperity is already approaching.
The Lotus Leaf: Silent Protector
The silver setting for this earring takes the form of a lotus leaf, and this choice carries its own weight of meaning.
In Chinese culture, the lotus is known as the "gentleman among flowers." The Song Dynasty philosopher Zhou Dunyi wrote the famous line that has echoed through a thousand years of art and literature: the lotus rises from the mud, yet remains unstained. This quality of emerging pure from impure conditions makes the lotus a universal symbol of integrity, resilience, and spiritual clarity.
But we were drawn specifically to the leaf rather than the flower. While the lotus blossom gets most of the attention, the leaf is the quiet protector of the entire plant. It rises above the water's surface to shield what grows beneath. Rain falls on a lotus leaf and beads up into perfect silver droplets, rolling off without leaving a trace. The leaf stays dry in a downpour. It endures storms without absorbing them.
This felt like the right companion for a Pixiu. Where the mythical beast actively draws in wealth and fights off negativity, the lotus leaf provides a foundation of calm protection. Together, they create a complete picture: fierce ambition held within serene integrity.
Our artisans sculpted the silver lotus leaf with a gentle, organic wave, capturing the way a real leaf curves and ripples in a breeze. The matte finish on the silver was deliberate. We wanted the metal to feel soft and natural rather than flashy, letting the jadeite remain the star of the piece.
Diamond Dewdrops: The Detail That Completes the Story
If you look closely at the earring, you will notice small diamonds set into the design. These are not decorative afterthoughts. They represent dewdrops on the lotus leaf.
In Chinese poetry and painting, a dewdrop on a lotus leaf is one of the most celebrated images of natural beauty. The drop sits perfectly round on the leaf's surface, catching light like a tiny mirror, here one moment and gone the next. It represents the preciousness of the present moment, a reminder that beauty is fleeting and should be noticed while it lasts.
There is also a practical symbolism at work. Water on a lotus leaf never soaks in. It simply rolls away, leaving the surface clean. In the context of this earring's overall design narrative, the diamond dewdrops reinforce the idea of purity and non-attachment: wealth flows toward the Pixiu, blessings gather on the lotus leaf, and nothing harmful can penetrate.
The diamonds also create a beautiful visual bridge between Eastern and Western jewelry traditions. A Western eye recognizes the sparkle of diamonds as a sign of luxury. An Eastern eye sees the dewdrop on the lotus leaf and understands the philosophical layer beneath. This is exactly the kind of cross-cultural dialogue we aim for in every TATHATĀ design.
How This Earring Is Worn
This is a single earring, designed to be worn as a statement piece on one ear. In Chinese tradition, asymmetry carries its own beauty. A single Pixiu earring draws the eye without overwhelming the wearer, and it allows the piece to function almost like a small talisman worn close to the body.
The earring can be oriented in two ways. Worn with the lotus leaf on top and the Pixiu hanging below, it suggests the guardian resting beneath a protective canopy. Flipped the other way, with the Pixiu on top and the leaf below, it evokes the creature perched on its lotus throne, surveying the world for treasures to claim.
Both orientations tell a slightly different story. We encourage the wearer to choose whichever resonates with their own intention.
The Craft Behind the Carving
Each Pixiu is carved by hand from a single piece of natural Grade-A Burmese jadeite. The carver must read the stone first, understanding its internal structure, color distribution, and any natural inclusions before making the first cut. Violet jadeite is particularly challenging to work with because its color can shift in depth across the stone. A skilled carver uses these variations to add dimension to the Pixiu's features, allowing lighter areas to catch light on the face and deeper tones to create shadow along the body.
The Pixiu's expression matters. Traditional carvings show the creature with its mouth open, ready to receive wealth. Our version maintains this detail while keeping the overall form smooth and rounded, suitable for everyday wear as jewelry rather than a standalone figurine.
Every piece comes with certification confirming the jadeite is natural and untreated Grade-A, meaning it has undergone no chemical enhancement, dyeing, or polymer impregnation. What you see and feel is exactly what nature created, finished only by the carver's hand and the polisher's patience.
A Piece That Carries Intention
We did not design this earring to be simply beautiful, although we believe it is. We designed it to carry meaning into the wearer's daily life.
The Pixiu guards and attracts. The violet jadeite signals that good fortune is already on its way. The lotus leaf provides a foundation of integrity. The diamond dewdrops remind us to notice the small, luminous moments.
Together, these elements form a kind of wearable philosophy, one that says: pursue abundance without losing your center. Welcome prosperity while staying grounded in what matters.
That is the story this earring tells. And now, it waits to become part of yours.
