From Seeing to Being: The Journey Inside the TATHATĀ Logo

TATHATĀ is a way of seeing before it is a name.

In Sanskrit, tathatā means suchness: the quality of things being exactly as they are, without addition or correction. It is a quiet word. It does not ask the world to change. It asks us to notice what is already here.

That idea shapes everything we make. At TATHATĀ, jadeite is not simply a gemstone set into jewelry. It is a material formed over geological time, chosen by hand, and given form by craftsmanship and intention. Each piece is an invitation to slow down, become present, and return to something within.

Our logo was drawn from the same philosophy. At first glance it is a simple line: a sun above a horizon, a ripple of light descending into a small spiral, and the word TATHATĀ beneath it. Looked at more closely, it holds five elements, and together they trace a single path from light to awareness.

The Rising Sun

The journey begins at the top of the mark, with a sun lifting above the horizon.

A rising sun has always carried a sense of beginning. It marks the arrival of light after darkness and the possibility of a new day. For TATHATĀ, it represents awakening: the moment we begin to see more clearly, not because the world has changed, but because we have become more aware of what was always there.

Before understanding, there is the willingness to look. The sun is that willingness.

The Shimmering Sea

Beneath the sun runs the horizon, and from it a line of light ripples downward. Anyone who has watched sunrise over water knows this image. The sun stays above, yet its presence reaches us through the path it lays across the surface.

The Shimmering Sea represents reflection. What we see in the world is closely tied to what we carry within. A calm mind sees stillness. A restless mind sees movement everywhere. The sea is not only a landscape; it is a mirror between the outer world and the inner one.

This is also how we understand jadeite. Every stone has its own color, texture, translucency, and natural inclusions. Its beauty does not come from uniformity. It comes from being itself. That is suchness, held in the hand.

The Eye of Prajñā

Follow the ripple of light down and it gathers into a small spiral. That spiral is the ūrṇā, the mark between the brows in the traditional image of the Eye of Prajñā. In our logo it appears twice: at the end of the descending light, and above the letter H in the wordmark, where it sits like a third eye at the center of the name.

Prajñā is wisdom, or insight. The eye stands for a different kind of seeing, one that goes beyond the surface.

We live in a world that asks us to look quickly. Is it beautiful? Is it rare? Is it valuable? Is it perfect? Jadeite invites another kind of attention. Look again. Watch how color moves through the stone. Notice the texture, the inclusions, the way light passes through. Notice what makes this piece unlike any other.

The Eye of Prajñā represents this deeper seeing. Beauty, in our view, does not depend on perfection. It can live in character, in individuality, in presence. As we say in our philosophy: beauty is not perfection. It is presence.

The Seed Syllable A

Within the name itself sits the letter A, and behind it, in the fuller version of our visual language, the seed syllable A written in its traditional script.

In many Buddhist traditions, A is the first sound and the seed from which all others unfold. It represents origin: the beginning of expression, the point where possibility becomes form.

A seed contains something much larger than itself. In the same way, a piece of rough jadeite looks nothing like what it will become. The final form is already inside the stone, waiting. Craftsmanship does not invent that possibility. It reveals it.

This is why we treat bespoke work as something more than a design service. A client may begin with an intention, a memory, a symbol, or only a feeling. Through selection, design, and carving, that inner vision gradually takes physical form. What begins within becomes something that can be held and worn.

The Moon

Above the A rests a small crescent. It is easy to read as an accent mark. It is a moon.

If the sun is illumination, the moon is reflection. The sun shines outward; the moon receives light and returns it softly. Together they hold a balance between seeing the world and turning inward.

The moon represents stillness, intuition, and the quieter side of awareness. Not every answer is found through action. Sometimes we understand more by becoming still. Jade has been valued this way for thousands of years, not only for its physical beauty but for the virtues and inner qualities people have seen in it. The moon in our name carries that lineage forward.

One Path, Read from Top to Bottom

The Rising Sun brings light. The Shimmering Sea reflects it. The light gathers into the Eye of Prajñā and learns to see. The seed syllable A returns us to the beginning. The Moon draws us inward.

From the outer world toward inner awareness. From seeing to understanding. From understanding to presence. From presence to simply being.

That is where TATHATĀ begins.

Jadeite as a Companion

We have always believed jadeite can be more than adornment. Each stone was shaped by the earth long before it reached anyone's hands. Once chosen and crafted, it takes on another layer of meaning through the life of the person who wears it.

A bangle becomes part of a daily ritual. A pendant holds a personal symbol. A ring marks a new chapter. A bespoke piece turns an intention into something physical.

This is why we describe our creations as companions. They do not need to define who you are. They can simply remind you: to slow down, to look again, to return to yourself, and to appreciate what is already here.

As It Is

Things as they are. Not as they should be, not as we wish them to be, not as someone else says they must be.

Every jadeite stone has its own story. Some are vivid and luminous. Some are quiet and understated. Some reveal themselves at once; others ask for patience and a closer look. There is no single definition of beautiful jadeite, only the experience of meeting the stone as it truly is.

Perhaps that is what makes jade meaningful. It gives us a chance to practice the same awareness with ourselves: to stop trying to become something else, and to recognize what is already present.

From the Rising Sun to the Shimmering Sea. From the Eye of Prajñā to the seed syllable A. From the Moon to the quiet center within.
