Violet Wing: The Jadeite Collection That Carries a Wish
Some pieces of jadeite arrive with a story already written into the stone. The Violet Wing collection is one of them, and this is how it begins.
The lavender jadeite bangle at the center of this collection was unearthed from the borderlands of Myanmar, where the world's finest gem-quality jade has been sourced for centuries. Its color is not the deep imperial green that most people picture when they think of jade. It is softer than that: a pale, luminous violet that seems almost internally lit, the color of light through thin clouds just before dawn.
We named this collection Violet Wing. The butterflies were the starting point.
Why Butterflies
In Chinese tradition, the butterfly is one of the oldest symbols of transformation and fulfilled longing. The philosopher Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, weightless, moving without effort, and when he woke, he famously wondered: was he a man dreaming of being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming of being a man? The question has never been resolved. That is the point.
In the classical Chinese symbolic vocabulary, the butterfly carries connotations of manifestation: of desires made real, of things hoped for that arrive. It represents the journey from chrysalis to wing, from invisible to visible. In fengshui philosophy, the purple and violet spectrum is associated with recognition, clarity of purpose, and the kind of energy that helps intentions take form.
We are careful not to overstate this. A piece of jadeite does not cast spells. What we believe is simpler: the objects we carry with intention become vessels for that intention. They remind us of what we want to cultivate. That is a kind of power, even if it is a quiet one.
The Jadeite Itself
The bangle is natural lavender jadeite, untreated and unenhanced, classified as Grade A, the only grade recognized by gemological standards as genuine. The color is entirely geological: trace iron and manganese within the crystal lattice, laid down millions of years ago, with no human intervention.
On jade grading: only Grade A jadeite, natural and untreated, is considered genuine jade in the international gemological community. Grade B has been chemically bleached and polymer-filled; Grade C has been artificially dyed. All TATHATĀ pieces are Grade A, accompanied by gemological documentation on request.
Lavender jadeite is considerably rarer than green. The conditions required to produce a clean, evenly distributed violet hue are precise and uncommon. Most lavender material is included, cloudy, or unevenly toned. A bangle with this level of translucency and color distribution represents a meaningful portion of what comes out of the ground each year that qualifies as gem-grade.
The matching earrings in the Violet Wing set feature spherical lavender jadeite beads with small green jadeite caps, a traditional pairing that references the classic combination of purple and green in the jade world, known in Mandarin as chun dai cui (春带彩), meaning "spring brings color." It is considered an auspicious combination.
How to Wear It
The Violet Wing bangle is intended to be worn close to the skin. Traditional jade philosophy holds that jade and the wearer develop a relationship over years, that the warmth and oils of the body slowly deepen the stone's translucency, creating a dialogue between person and mineral that no other material replicates in quite the same way.
Lavender jadeite jewelry pairs quietly with neutral tones: ivory, oat, pale grey, cream. It also arrives with quiet drama against deep charcoal or black. It does not compete. It arrives as a considered presence rather than a statement, which is, we think, the more lasting kind of beauty.
A Note on Sourcing
Every stone in the TATHATĀ collection is personally reviewed before acquisition. Lavender jadeite in particular requires in-person assessment. Photographs do not capture the way light moves through the structure, and color temperature shifts make digital evaluation unreliable. This piece was selected in person, handled, held under natural light and UV, and assessed for treatment prior to purchase.
We do not acquire anything we would not wear ourselves. That has been the guiding principle since the studio began.
