Legend has it that when the world was first formed, the only Fire Phoenix in existence dwelt upon Mount Danxue in the Wilds. Its body was clad in plumage of burnished red-gold, wreathed in an eternal, warming flame, and it could live for five hundred years.

This mountain is located in Weifang, Shandong, and is now known as Mount Yi.

As the end of its life approached, the Fire Phoenix would fly across the four seas to gather wutong wood, fragrant sandalwood, and sacred timber, piling them high upon the mountain peak. Alone, it would summon its innate divine fire to ignite the pyre. Plunging into the inferno, it allowed the flames to consume its body. In that blaze, its old wings, past wounds, and the ravages of age all dissolved away.

Once the fire burned out, a lustrous, glowing egg would emerge from the ashes. After seven days of nourishment by the rosy dawn light, a brand-new Fire Phoenix would break free, its wings more radiant than before, its spiritual power greater than ever.
