The Jadeite Gourd: Why Hulu Jewelry Is One of the Most Meaningful Symbols in Chinese Jade Carving

The Jadeite Gourd: Why Hulu Jewelry Is One of the Most Meaningful Symbols in Chinese Jade Carving

If you've spent any time browsing Chinese jade jewelry, you've likely noticed a recurring shape: a smooth, curved form with a narrow waist and two rounded ends, almost like a figure eight. This is the hulu (葫芦), or gourd, and it's one of the most beloved and enduring motifs in jadeite carving. Far from a decorative accident, the gourd shape carries centuries of symbolism, and today it remains one of the most requested forms in bespoke jadeite design.

What Does the Gourd Symbolize?

The gourd's significance in Chinese culture runs deep, and it comes from several overlapping traditions.

A vessel for blessings. The gourd's natural shape, a narrow neck opening into a rounded belly, made it one of humanity's earliest containers, used to carry water, wine, and medicine long before pottery. That practical function became symbolic: a gourd "holds" and "gathers" what's precious, which is why it came to represent the containment and accumulation of good fortune.

A pun on prosperity. In Chinese, hulu (葫芦) sounds close to fu lu (福禄), blessings and prosperity, making the gourd a natural stand-in for wishing someone wealth and good fortune. This kind of homophonic symbolism is common in Chinese decorative arts, and it's part of why the gourd shows up so often in jewelry meant as gifts.

A guardian against misfortune. In Daoist tradition, the gourd is closely tied to Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals, who carried a medicine gourd said to hold elixirs of healing and longevity. Because of this association, gourds were historically hung in homes or worn on the body as protective talismans, believed to absorb negative energy and ward off illness.

A wish for many descendants. Gourds grow on climbing vines and are famously full of seeds; a single plant can produce dozens. This made the gourd a natural symbol of fertility and an unbroken family line, often gifted to newlyweds or new parents as a wish for abundant, thriving generations.

Two joined as one. Because the gourd's silhouette naturally divides into two rounded halves connected at the waist, it's also read as two vessels joined together, a symbol of harmony, partnership, and balance between two people or two forms of luck.

Why Jadeite Gourds Are So Prized

Jadeite already carries its own weight of meaning in Chinese culture, associated with virtue, protection, and quiet strength. When that symbolism is combined with the gourd's own layered meanings of fortune, protection, and abundance, the result is a piece of jewelry that's doing double duty: the material and the shape are both blessings.

It also helps that the gourd's soft, curved form is exceptionally well suited to jade carving. The rounded belly shows off a stone's translucency and color the way few other shapes can, and the narrow waist gives carvers room to play with proportion, texture, and the natural color zoning within a piece of rough jadeite.

The Gourd, Reimagined: TATHATĀ's Hulu Collection

At TATHATĀ, the gourd is one of our most requested carving forms, both in ready-to-wear pieces and in bespoke commissions, where clients frequently select loose jadeite stones or cabochons specifically to be carved into gourds. Here's a closer look at how the motif comes to life across our collection.

Sun and Moon Twin Gourds Pendant pairs a warm honey-yellow gourd with a luminous icy-white gourd, set in 925Sliver. The two colors echo the golden glow of the sun and the soft light of the moon, a visual expression of balance and "double fortune," with the classic gourd form carrying its timeless wish for safety and smooth sailing.

Hot Pick Icy-Type White Gourd Ring takes the "two gourds joined" idea further with a large and small gourd set side by side on a diamond-pavé silver band. The pairing of a bigger and smaller gourd is traditionally read as success in both major and minor endeavors: fulfillment in both life and career.

Trio Lavender Gourd Loose Jadeite carves three gourds intertwined in a single lavender stone, threaded with wisps of green. Three gourds clustered together intensify the symbolism of abundance, while their tightly entwined form speaks to unity, a piece that works equally well as a pendant or as the centerpiece of a custom design.

Prosperity Gourd Ring (17mm) is a single, generously proportioned icy-green gourd set in gold with delicate diamond accents, a purer, more minimal expression of the motif for those who want the symbolism front and center without embellishment.

Pastel Aurora Gourd Bracelet strings five gourds together in a soft blend of icy white, honey yellow, and apple green. The continuous, repeating arrangement symbolizes an unbroken, flowing stream of good fortune, while the three colors are traditionally read as representing fortune, prosperity, and longevity together.

Custom Gourd Carving: A Client Favorite

Beyond our ready-made pieces, the gourd is consistently one of the most popular requests in our bespoke customization service. Clients often select a loose jadeite stone or cabochon specifically to have it carved into a gourd, whether as a single form, a pair, or a cluster, and set into a pendant, ring, or bracelet of their choosing. It's a favorite for milestone gifts: weddings, new babies, career changes, or simply as a personal talisman meant to be carried for years.

If you're drawn to the meaning behind the hulu but haven't found the exact piece, this is often where a custom commission makes the most sense, pairing a stone's natural color and translucency with a carving that's been meaningful for centuries.
