In traditional Chinese folklore, the number "five" corresponds to the "Five Blessings" —the five forms of good fortune considered most complete by the ancients, longevity, wealth and honor, health and peace, virtuous character, and a peaceful end. In the past, prominent families would personally craft five round jade pieces and string them into a bracelet to gift to the younger generation. Legend held that gathering all five ring-shaped jade pieces allowed one to keep these five blessings close at hand, with not a single one to be left out.
