Legend has it that Maitreya incarnated as the "Cloth-Sack Monk". Always smiling, he wandered far and wide carrying a large cloth sack capable of gathering up the world's troubles, calamities, and poverty. People facing hardship would pray to him, believing he would take away their worries and bestow upon them joy and abundance. His pot-bellied figure symbolizes an all-encompassing nature, one that does not dwell on gains or losses and views worldly trifles with equanimity. In later times, people began carving images of Maitreya into jade pendants to wear, symbolizing the gathering and dispelling of all worries, ensuring a heart filled with joy and peace.
